Project Idea

This is a rough idea for the technical side of a final year project I’d be interested in supervising. It’s likely to be of interest to students that are already technically experienced in mobile & server development, or who’d like to move into those fields.

Build a (small, unpolished, proof of concept) mobile app that can stream some information about its environment, for example, images, a video feed, GPS location, orientation, noise levels, temperature. i.e. something or anything the devices sensors can record.

The key deliverable of the project is a web based service for processing & extracting data from live feeds, for example, images from mobile devices. The service could (again, for example) use freeware OCR such as OCRopus to extract data from images.

Create or adopt a suitable system for combining data extracted from different sources for novel purposes. For example, if two mobiles in close proximity are location aware, and car registrations can be identified from the data, could traffic congestion or traffic speeding offences be automatically discovered by comparing the times when registration plates travel through each location?
